The Oakfield design on a phone: an example joiner’s website asking what you are having made
An example joiner's site on Setout, in the Oakfield design: "What are you having made?" at the top, and your work below. Built for you, and you see it before you pay.

People who want something made to measure, a staircase, fitted wardrobes, an oak door, have usually been staring at a gap for months. When they finally search for a joiner, they're looking at one thing: the work. Is it the quality they want, and has this joiner made something like theirs before?

Setout builds you a website that puts your work first, on a design made for joiners and carpenters. Customers tell you what they want made and how to reach them in one short form, and it lands in your email. They can book a measuring visit online and get an email reminder the day before. You see the whole site on your phone before you pay a penny.

What every joiner's website needs

Whoever builds your website, these seven things win a joiner the made-to-measure work. Use them as a checklist for the site you have now.

  1. Your best work, photographed well

Photograph finished pieces in daylight, straight on, with the room tidy. Add a close-up of a joint or a detail. Say what it is, what timber and where: "Oak staircase with glass balustrade, Norwich."

On Setout: Your photos go in a gallery on your site, added from your phone. Several designs give each job its own case study page too.

  2. How a commission works

Measure, drawing, quote, making, fitting. Say how long each stage usually takes for you. Made-to-measure customers worry most about the unknown, so tell them.

On Setout: The Oakfield design has three numbered steps for your process, in your own words.

  3. Your real lead times

If you're booked up for eight weeks, say so. Customers who know the wait plan around it; customers who don't, ring someone else when you don't start next week.

On Setout: Change your wording in a minute from your phone whenever your diary changes.

  4. Timbers and finishes

Say what you work in (oak, ash, walnut, painted MDF) and which finishes you use. People search for "oak staircase" and "painted alcove units", and the words on your page help Google match you to them.

On Setout: Each service has its own description, and can have its own page on your site, such as "fitted wardrobes Norwich".

  5. Fire doors, if you fit them

Landlords and flat owners need fire doors fitted properly. If you hold a third-party certification for fire door installation, such as FIRAS or BM TRADA, say so. It opens up regular commercial work.

On Setout: Add your certifications in the editor and they show in a strip at the top of your site.

  6. An easy first step

Ask what they want made and how to reach them, and nothing else. The detail comes on the measuring visit.

On Setout: Oakfield asks "What are you having made?" with a pick of your services, then a name and a number, and emails it to you. Measuring visits can be booked online too.

  7. Real reviews, with names and towns

Ask for a Google review on the day you fit, while the customer is admiring it, and put the best on your site.

On Setout: You add reviews to your site in a minute. After an online booking, Setout can email the customer a link to leave you a Google review.

Questions joiners ask us

How quickly can you build a website for my joinery business?

Usually within a couple of days of our call. Send us photos of your work, your services and the area you cover. You see the site on your phone before you pay anything.

Can customers book a measuring visit online?

Yes. Add measuring visits as a service, free or priced. Customers pick a time, you get the booking by email and they get a confirmation and an email reminder.

Can I add new work myself?

Yes. Add photos to your gallery from your phone as each job finishes, with a line saying what it is and where.

I already get work from Checkatrade or a Facebook page. Do I need a website as well?

Keep them both. Directories send you enquiries and Facebook keeps regulars in touch, but neither is yours. A website on your own address is where Google sends people who search for your trade and town, where a customer checks you out before they ring and where enquiries come straight to you with no fee per lead. Your Facebook page and your website can link to each other.

Can I keep my existing web address?

Yes. We connect the address you already have to your new site. If you don't have one, we register one for you, and it's included while you subscribe.

What does it cost, and is there a contract?

£39 a month including VAT, or £390 for the year. That's for the whole business, with hosting, security and your web address included, and no setup fee. There's no contract, so you can cancel any time, and if it isn't right for you we'll refund your first payment in full within 30 days. You pay nothing at all until your site is live.

Tell us about your business. We'll build your site and send you the link to see it before you pay.

We'll call you the same working day, weekdays, if you ask before 3pm. Ask after 3pm or at the weekend and we'll call you the next working day. There's nothing to pay until your site is live.
