The Driving design on a phone: an example driving instructor’s website with a pass-rate ring
An example instructor's site on Setout, in the Driving design: manual or automatic, door to door and a ring for your own pass rate. Built for you, and you see it before you pay.

Learners, and often their parents, search for a driving instructor by town and test centre. They compare prices, check for a manual or automatic car, read reviews from people who passed and pick someone who sounds patient. Then they want to book the first lesson without phone tag.

Setout builds you that website, on a design made for driving instructors. Your prices, your car and the test centres you cover are on the page, with your own pass rate if you choose to show it. Learners book lessons online and get an email reminder the day before. You see the whole site on your phone before you pay a penny.

What every driving instructor's website needs

Whoever builds your website, these seven things win a driving instructor new pupils. Use them as a checklist for the site you have now.

  1. Your ADI badge

Only DVSA Approved Driving Instructors, with a green badge, or trainees with a trainee licence, with a pink badge, can charge for driving lessons. Say which you hold, and your standards check grade if you're proud of it.

On Setout: Your badge and grade go in your about section and, on designs with a highlights strip, in a line of badges across the page.

  2. Prices, blocks and intensive courses

Hourly rate, block bookings, two-hour lessons, intensive courses, test-day car hire: list them. Learners compare instructors on price.

On Setout: Each lesson type has its own price and length, and can have its own page on your site.

  3. The towns and test centres you cover

People search for "driving lessons" plus their town or test centre. Name them all, and say whether you pick up from home, school or work.

On Setout: We put your area in your page title ("Driving lessons in Stevenage"), and each area or lesson type can have its own page.

  4. Manual or automatic, and your car

Say which you teach in, what car it is and that it has dual controls. Automatic lessons are increasingly asked for, so if you offer them, say so near the top.

On Setout: The Driving design shows manual or automatic and door-to-door pick-ups in the first screen.

  5. Pass rates you can stand behind

If you show a pass rate, use your own figures and say what period they cover. Honest numbers persuade more than big ones.

On Setout: The Driving design has a ring for your own pass rate, which you set and update yourself.

  6. Help with theory and booking the test

Point learners to GOV.UK to book their theory and practical tests, and warn them about unofficial sites that charge extra. It's useful advice, and it shows you're on their side.

On Setout: Write it once as a blog post or on your page, from your phone.

  7. Lesson booking and a cancellation rule

Say how much notice you need to cancel a lesson, usually 48 hours, and what happens if a lesson is missed. Learners and parents prefer a rule they know.

On Setout: Learners book online and get an email reminder. Set how late they can cancel or move online; after that, they're asked to call you.

Questions driving instructors ask us

How quickly can you build a website for my driving school?

Usually within a couple of days of our call. Send us your prices, your car, your areas and test centres and a few reviews. You see the site on your phone before you pay anything.

Can learners book lessons online?

Yes. Each lesson type has its own length and price. Learners pick a time, you get the booking by email and they get a confirmation and an email reminder.

Can parents buy lessons as a gift?

Yes. Sell gift cards from your own site, and learners spend them when they book.

Can learners pay by card when they book?

Not yet. Today learners pay in person, by bank transfer, PayPal or a payment link, and you mark lessons as paid.

Most of my clients come by word of mouth. Do I need a website?

Word of mouth brings the best clients, and many of them look you up before they get in touch. A website on your own address is what they find: what you do, what it costs, who you are and how to book. It's also where Google sends people who search for what you do in your town.

What does it cost, and is there a contract?

£39 a month including VAT, or £390 for the year. That's for the whole business, with hosting, security and your web address included, and no setup fee. There's no contract, so you can cancel any time, and if it isn't right for you we'll refund your first payment in full within 30 days. You pay nothing at all until your site is live.

Tell us about your business. We'll build your site and send you the link to see it before you pay.

We'll call you the same working day, weekdays, if you ask before 3pm. Ask after 3pm or at the weekend and we'll call you the next working day. There's nothing to pay until your site is live.
