The Marlowe design on a phone: an example decorator’s website with colour swatches
An example decorator's site on Setout, in the Marlowe design: colour swatches and a colour consultation customers can book. Built for you, and you see it before you pay.

Everyone thinks they can paint a room until they've tried. The customers who ring a decorator have usually decided they want it done properly, and they're judging "properly" from your website: the finish in your photos, how you talk about preparation and whether you'll protect their floors and furniture.

Setout builds you a website that shows the finish and explains the care, on a design made for painters and decorators. Customers ask for a quote in a short form that lands in your email, or book a quote visit online and get an email reminder the day before. You see the whole site on your phone before you pay a penny.

What every decorator's website needs

Whoever builds your website, these seven things win a decorator the better jobs. Use them as a checklist for the site you have now.

  1. Photos of the finish, with the colours named

A crisp cut-in line and an even finish sell your work. Photograph rooms in daylight and name the paint: "Hallway in Farrow & Ball Railings, gloss woodwork." People search for colours, and they love to copy a room they like.

On Setout: Your photos go in a gallery on your site, added from your phone in a few taps.

  2. How you prepare

Most of a good job is preparation: filling, sanding, priming, a mist coat on new plaster. Say what you do and why. It's how a customer tells a decorator from someone with a roller.

On Setout: The Marlowe design has numbered steps for your process, in your own words.

  3. How you protect the home

Dust sheets, masking, who moves the furniture and how you leave the place each evening. It's the question customers worry about most and ask least.

On Setout: Your own wording goes anywhere on your page, and you can change it yourself.

  4. Lead paint in older homes

Homes painted before the 1960s may have lead paint under the newer coats, and sanding it makes dangerous dust. If you work on older houses, say how you test for lead and how you deal with it. It's a mark of a decorator who knows the trade.

On Setout: Write it once on your page, and it answers the question for every visitor.

  5. Prices or a guide to them

Give a guide price for a typical room, a hallway or a front door, and say what's included: paint, preparation, ceilings, woodwork. A starting figure stops time-wasting on both sides.

On Setout: Each service has its own price and description, and can have its own page on your site, such as "exterior painting Bath".

  6. Your memberships and guarantees

If you're a member of the Painting and Decorating Association, or approved by a paint maker's scheme, say so and say what guarantee comes with it.

On Setout: Add your memberships in the editor and they show in a strip at the top of your site.

  7. An easy way to ask for a quote

Ask which rooms, roughly when and the best number to call. Offer a visit at a time that suits them.

On Setout: Marlowe's consultation form emails you the moment it's sent, and quote visits can be booked online with an email reminder.

How it works

  1. Tell us about your business

Fill in the form below. We'll call you the same working day, weekdays, if you ask before 3pm. Ask after 3pm or at the weekend and we'll call you the next working day. Send us your current website or Facebook page, a few photos, your services and the area you cover. One phone call is usually enough.

  2. We build it

We build your site on a design made for decorators, with your services, your area, your reviews and a way for customers to reach you. It's usually ready within a couple of days.

  3. You see it on your phone before you pay

We send you a private link. Look at it on your phone, show it to whoever you like and tell us what to change. You pay nothing until it goes live.

Questions decorators ask us

How quickly can you build a website for my decorating business?

Usually within a couple of days of our call. Send us photos of your work, your services and the towns you cover. You see the site on your phone before you pay anything.

Can customers book a quote visit online?

Yes. Add quote visits as a service. Customers pick a time, you get the booking by email and they get a confirmation and an email reminder.

Can I add photos of each job myself?

Yes. Add them from your phone as you finish, with the colours you used.

I already get work from Checkatrade or a Facebook page. Do I need a website as well?

Keep them both. Directories send you enquiries and Facebook keeps regulars in touch, but neither is yours. A website on your own address is where Google sends people who search for your trade and town, where a customer checks you out before they ring and where enquiries come straight to you with no fee per lead. Your Facebook page and your website can link to each other.

Can I keep my existing web address?

Yes. We connect the address you already have to your new site. If you don't have one, we register one for you, and it's included while you subscribe.

What does it cost, and is there a contract?

£39 a month including VAT, or £390 for the year. That's for the whole business, with hosting, security and your web address included, and no setup fee. There's no contract, so you can cancel any time, and if it isn't right for you we'll refund your first payment in full within 30 days. You pay nothing at all until your site is live.

Tell us about your business. We'll build your site and send you the link to see it before you pay.

We'll call you the same working day, weekdays, if you ask before 3pm. Ask after 3pm or at the weekend and we'll call you the next working day. There's nothing to pay until your site is live.
