The Slate design on a phone: an example builder’s website with a call button
An example builder's site on Setout, in the Slate design: bold and industrial, with your number one tap away. Built for you, and you see it before you pay.

Hiring a builder is one of the biggest cheques most families ever write. Before they invite anyone round to quote for an extension, a loft or a renovation, they look at the builder's website for three things: work like theirs, people who were happy and signs that this builder runs a tidy, honest job.

Setout builds you a website that shows exactly that, on a design made for builders. Your finished projects each get their own page with photos and the story of the job. Your reviews and memberships sit where customers look for them, and enquiries come to your email the moment they're sent. You see the whole site on your phone before you pay a penny.

What every builder's website needs

Whoever builds your website, these seven things win builders the bigger jobs. Use them as a checklist for the site you have now.

  1. Finished projects, each with its story

Show the kitchen extension, not just the kitchen. A project page with photos from start to finish, the town, how long it took and what went wrong and how you fixed it is the most persuasive thing a builder can publish.

On Setout: Several designs give each project its own case study page, with photos and your write-up. You add them from your phone as jobs finish.

  2. How a job runs with you

Spell out your process: the first visit, the written quote, drawings and approvals, the start date, staged payments and the final sign-off. Customers who know what happens next are customers who sign.

On Setout: Your process goes on your page in your own words, and you can change it yourself.

  3. Planning and building regulations, explained

Planning permission is about whether you can build something; building regulations are about how it's built. Many extensions need building regulations approval even when they don't need planning permission. Say which you help with, and customers will see you know the ground.

On Setout: Write it once in your own words, and it's there on every visit. You can change it yourself whenever the rules change.

  4. Your memberships and insurance

If you belong to the Federation of Master Builders or TrustMark, say so; both check their members. Say that you carry public liability insurance, and how much. Customers ask, and a builder who says it first looks like one with nothing to hide.

On Setout: Add your memberships and insurance in the editor and they show in a strip at the top of your site.

  5. How you take payment

Say how you're paid: a deposit, staged payments as the work progresses and the balance on completion. Never ask for everything up front, and say so. It's the question every customer is too polite to ask.

On Setout: Your payment terms go on your page in your own words.

  6. The areas you work in

Name the towns and villages you cover. It helps Google show you to people nearby, and saves you quoting for jobs an hour away.

On Setout: We put your towns in your page text and your page title ("Builder in Norwich"), so Google and your customers can see where you work.

  7. An enquiry form that gets the details

Ask what they want built, roughly when and the best number to ring. A clear enquiry is a shorter first call.

On Setout: Your enquiry form emails you the moment it's sent, and every enquiry is kept in your customer list.

How it works

  1. Tell us about your business

Fill in the form below. We'll call you the same working day, weekdays, if you ask before 3pm. Ask after 3pm or at the weekend and we'll call you the next working day. Send us your current website or Facebook page, a few photos, your services and the area you cover. One phone call is usually enough.

  2. We build it

We build your site on a design made for builders, with your services, your area, your reviews and a way for customers to reach you. It's usually ready within a couple of days.

  3. You see it on your phone before you pay

We send you a private link. Look at it on your phone, show it to whoever you like and tell us what to change. You pay nothing until it goes live.

Questions builders ask us

How quickly can you build a website for my building business?

Usually within a couple of days of our call. Send us photos of finished jobs, your services, your memberships and the towns you cover. You see the site on your phone before you pay anything.

Can I show each project on its own page?

Yes, on designs with case studies. Each project gets a page with its photos and your write-up, and you can add new ones from your phone.

I'm busy for months. Will a website just bring me more calls I can't take?

Your website can say when you're next free and what size of job you take on, so the enquiries you get are the ones you want. You can change it yourself in a minute when your diary opens up.

I already get work from Checkatrade or a Facebook page. Do I need a website as well?

Keep them both. Directories send you enquiries and Facebook keeps regulars in touch, but neither is yours. A website on your own address is where Google sends people who search for your trade and town, where a customer checks you out before they ring and where enquiries come straight to you with no fee per lead. Your Facebook page and your website can link to each other.

Can I keep my existing web address?

Yes. We connect the address you already have to your new site. If you don't have one, we register one for you, and it's included while you subscribe.

What does it cost, and is there a contract?

£39 a month including VAT, or £390 for the year. That's for the whole business, with hosting, security and your web address included, and no setup fee. There's no contract, so you can cancel any time, and if it isn't right for you we'll refund your first payment in full within 30 days. You pay nothing at all until your site is live.

Tell us about your business. We'll build your site and send you the link to see it before you pay.
